A Vintage Journey - Love is in the Air

Love is in the Air
Fabulous new challenge perfectly timed for Valentines Day
I have long wanted to produce a project based on Tim Holtz Heart and Soul project
So Astrid's challenge theme was the perfect opportunity
I started by applying DecoArt Texture Sand to one of Finnabairs altered frames
Once dry I applied Elegant Finish Metallic paint Shimmering Silver
The back panel was lined with Lost and found paper, and distresses with Black Soot Distress Ink around the edges
The paper mache heart was covered in embossed foil tape with Tim’s rivet texture fades, this is easier to do cutting into smaller pieces
Coloured with alcohol inks Butterscotch, Red peppermint, Espresso, Oregano, Pitch black
& Sunset orange by dropping and allowing them to merge together
Also applied to the silver finish on the frame and base and spread this with a pad with Alcohol Blending Solution
I cut the heart s from chipboard using Tims mini hearts movers and shapers, then applied Crackle Paste
I painted with Cadmium Red, Quinacridone Gold and Burnt Umber acrylics

I have to admit that alcohol inks were my first love of Tim’s products and I never fail to be amazed by the effects that can be achieved by them
I love the finished texture and colour effect here when combined with Texture Sand and Silver paint
I drilled holes into the base of the frame to hang swivel clasps, and attached a variety of Idea-ology items, Word Keys, Locket Keys, Star from the Metal Charm Pack, Cash Keys, Heart Charms
and a number of charms relating to fishing which is my beloved passion and this is a gift for him
Letters from Tim's Alpha Tiles and the wings from Regal Adornments

A Vintage Journey Challenge- Use a Portrait

A Vintage Journey’s new Challenge- Use a Portrait
Just as it's says, any portrait, any project

With so many fabulous Vintage Portraits within Tim Holtz product lines I was spoilt for choice
But one of my favourites is the lovely little dog from Tim’s Found Relatives

I started  by applying modelling paste through Tim’s Latticework stencil to a plain wood frame
Then coloured with Distress Stains, Rusty Hinge, Walnut Stain, Iced Spruce and Stormy Sky

Finished the edges and sides with distress inks Chipped Sapphire and Walnut Stain
The internal sides were painted with the same colours

The inside frame was covered with Distress Crackle Paint Vintage Photo left to dry followed by Weathered Wood and wiped back to show through  the base coat

The edges were distressed with Chipped Sapphire and Walnut Stain

The outer centre die cut Spellbinders Majestic Elements - Marvellous Squares
applied Metal Magic Blue Marble and and Tim Holtz Distress Powder Tea Dye

The inner one was coloured with Distress Stains, Rusty Hinge and Iced Spruce and then applied DecoArt Media Crackle Glaze and Carbon Black Antiquing cream

The small Infills were coloured with Iced Spruce Distress Stain and Rusty Hinge

The embellishments are from Tim Holtz Key Holes and Ornate Plates which were highlighted with Perfect Pearls Perfect Bronze
I stamped the birds on a wire from Creative Muse and  coloured with Iced Spruce and Walnut Stain distress ink

Assembled with Glossy Accents

I used a section of one of Tim’s Found Relative cards as my portrait
this little pooch reminds me of a dog I used to walk for a friend of my grandmas called Rusty after his great big spot marking just like photo!

I hope you have enjoyed my project, and hope that you take part in the challenge

Theatre of Keys- DecoArt Media Products

The full post of a project produced in the Autumn of 2014 for DecoArt
Theatre of Keys
Using DecoArt Media Acrylics, Mediums and Americana Decor Chalky Finish

This project started life as a junk shop find, it was a jewellery box keeping safe someone's precious jewels now it houses precious keys, 31 sparkling on the stage
My inspiration came from an installation that I viewed at the Tate Modern a number of years ago by Cornelia Parker, I love her work and this one particular installation was mesmerising
http://www.tate.org.uk/art/artworks/parker-cold-dark-matter-an-exploded-view-t06949
I started by taking out the glass panels and mirror back and set about distressing by scraping and sanding and a few knocks with a hammer
The cabinet had a drawer in the bottom which was ideal to hold a battery pack for a set of lights, the cable was run up the back and hidden with a piece of chipboard

The lights were housed in a drawer made from a wooden frame cut in half with holes drilled; I had to fix two batons to form runners for the lighting drawer, This also had the small screw eyes fixed to allow the strings for hanging the keys

I wanted to create an old theatre feel so set about with a distressed wallpaper layered effect
The background pattern embossed card with a lovely acanthus pattern then painted with DecoArt Media Prussian blue, Dioxadine Purple, Carbon black and Burnt Umber

Then highlighted with gold metallic and espresso metallic with additional washes and highlighting the result was a very rich subtle colour effect

The overlay peeling wallpaper was done with washes of Prussian Blue and Quinacridone Gold and stencilled with Burnt Umber, torn and distressed with burnt umber dripped down and quin gold applied on the torn edges and spritzed with Black Media Mister

I painted the inside of the cabinet with Carbon Black, then lined with the papers using Matt Medium

I attached a decorative resin embellishment to the top to stop it looking too box like
Then started on the outside applying American DĆ©cor Chalky Finish Enchanted, Vintage and Treasure
With the darker colours around the edges this was done quite randomly as it won't show under the top coat but having a variety of colours creates more interest

Once dry I applied a layer of Crackle medium allowed to dry for approx. 1 hr then applied Relic Chalky Finish the cracks start to appear immediately, but best leave to dry for a couple of hours

Amazing crackle effect!
Once complete I applied Americana DĆ©cor clear crĆØme wax and Deep brown around the edges
Then buffed with a clean cloth for a subtle stain shine, this is amazing as it really accentuated the colours making them richer colour tones as you can see on  the lefthand side

The screen doors, were cut on a Cricut machine, covered with Media texture sand and Painted with Carbon Black and dry brushed with Metallic Gold and Dazzling Metallics Espresso as was the fleur de Lys decorative border which covers the lighting tray

The keys are a variety of very rusted antique and new ones which were distressed in the same way as the trellis
The keys were tied to fine fishing line and with hooks attached at varying lengths and then attached to the screw eyes

Its Showtime!
The keys are spinning, twinkling and sparkling under the spotlights!
I hope you have enjoyed my project : )
